Estelle is a steel-hulled 53-metre long ship originally built for North Sea trawl fishing in Emden Germany 1922. In 1985, Estelle was acquired by Eestaas Oy and its transformation to a sailing ship began in Turku, 1986. Before being converted into vessel for solidarity exchange, she spent about fifteen years hauling gravel from Vuolahti to Helsinki Over the years, a group of volunyterrs have been responsible for Estelle's fitting and renovation. 2 June 1997 Estelle was certified as a Finnish merchant vessel. By recycling, experimenting and learning, a seaworthy sailing ship was born of the over 70 year-old trawler hull. At the same time, she was issued papers on a special-purpose basis (training vessel). After that, she has done campaign and transport work in the Baltic and North seas. 29 June 1999, Estelle was certified for ocean-going traffic, i.e. as seaworthy for all the world's ice-free waters. The ship is mainly chartered by Uusi Tuuli ry (New wind association). Uusi Tuuli ry is an organization attempting to sustain the world's best traditions: volunteerism, hospitality, caring, revel, adventure and learning. The main objective of the organisation is to work as an ideal coalition, as well as to promote international solidarity, fair international economic arrangements, peace, and mutual understanding between people and nations. Currently Estelle is used in an awareness raising international education project by Uusi Tuuli. Also the ship works as a forum for various NGOs and organisations who share an idea of a fairer world. Uusi Tuuli is planning a coffee cargo project to Southern Mexico to support the local and indigenous peoples rights in 2010-2011.
